Panzer 68 Serie 1

The Panzer 68 Serie 1 was a Swiss main battle tank developed in the late 1960s as a direct, modernized descendant of the earlier Panzer 61. Produced by the federal construction works (K+W Thun), this initial production batch officially entered service with the Swiss military in 1971. The vehicle was specifically tailored to Switzerland's unique defensive needs in the Alps and the Swiss Plateau, prioritizing excellent all-terrain mobility. It featured several notable upgrades over its predecessor, most significantly a two-plane stabilized version of the powerful 105 mm Royal Ordnance L7 rifled gun, which allowed crews to fire accurately while on the move. Additional enhancements included wider tracks for better performance in snow and soft soil, thicker frontal armor reaching up to 120 mm, and a more potent 660-horsepower MTU diesel engine. Despite these advancements, the Panzer 68 was widely considered obsolete upon its arrival, as its rolled homogenous steel armor and conventional armament fell short of contemporary foreign designs like the Soviet T-64 or British Chieftain.
