The Old Gang

The TOG series was a line of experimental British heavy tanks developed by The Old Gang (TOG), a group of World War I tank designers who sought to create a modern “land battleship” for World War II. The initial concept, the TOG Citadel, was a theoretical design emphasizing trench-crossing ability, thick armor, and endurance in static warfare. This vision took shape in 1940 with the TOG I, a massive prototype armed first with a French 75 mm gun in the hull and later a Matilda II turret. Though heavily armored, it proved slow and outdated for the fast, mobile warfare of the era. In response, engineers developed the TOG II, completed around 1941-42, featuring a more powerful diesel-electric drive and a large turret capable of mounting a 17-pounder gun. The tank offered improved firepower and mechanical reliability but remained excessively heavy and slow. Models of these kits will be available on our store soon.

Can’t wait to finally see this iconic tank in scale (hope its 1/35). The gun mounted in the last version of Tog 2 though is a 28-pdr prototype gun which basically consisted of a 17-pdr breach with a modified 3.7 AA gun barrel and a 17-pdr muzzel brake. Not a pure 17-pdr gun as was assumed for so long. I highly recommond watching the Bovington Tank Mueseum’s latest video on the Tog 2 as they correct a lot of the information the got wrong on it.
